With a week of good weather prior to this year’s event DDBC was hoping that Brechfa would be a dry one for a change, but as the early risers arrived at the start area in the pouring rain it was quickly decided to run on the “B” schedule. But as the first riders headed off at the 10am start the rain eased off a bit. The lap this year was about 25miles in length with 2 checks; check one being the shortest with the times tight enough to test most in each class. Check 2 including the test and fuelling, it also finally included a piece of going that the club had been working on for the last 18month that linked two off-road sections into one long enjoyable flowing section of going. Most of check two is a very enjoyable flowing riding with the exception of the now infamous GasGas hill, not the steepest or the most technical of hills but it always catches a few out especially the special-car, sorry the sidecar class. With most of the solo entry riding up without too much bother it was like a seen from a war film when the sidecar class arrived with marshals diving for cover. Strangely the clubmen sidecar class got up the hill on the first lap with less drama than the sidecar expert class! After GG hill it was a short ride to the test, again run mostly as it did last year but with the wet wooded bit replaced with a longer more technical section in the trees and more of the field used after the MX section. Once the riders finished the test it was a 10min ride back to the start for re-fuelling. With the rain gone and the sun trying its best, most riders had removed their wet weather gear and were ready for lap two and proper action. As the sun was fast drying the lap most were still a bit unsure just how hard to push on grassy part the test with only a second between all but one of the champ class at the end of the firs test, Dylan Jones on his Yam 125 fastest with the narrowest of margins, an on-form Greg Evans then stamped his authority on the remaining two test and taking the overall win from Edward Jones by 16 seconds. Solo expert winner was Robert Reese with David Lloyd Jones runner-up still recovering from a recent appendix op. Adrian Deeley won the clubman class with two very impressive test times, Paul Davies has now established himself as the man to beat at DDBC events in the Vet’s A class wining by a margin of just 4 seconds over 3 test, ex Welsh ISDE team rider Neil Williams won the Vet’s B with a time that was the best part of 2min ahead of his closest rival. The pairing of Williams and McPhee won the championship Sidecar class from local duo Davies and George who were on the pace in first test but lost a lot of time on the second after getting beached on a tree stump. Powell and Curnow won the sidecar clubman class from Wilkinson and Wilkinson but the third place pairing of Giles and Giles were the only ones to go clean on time in class. Dave Muller won the sportsman class by being the only clean on time. Feedback from the riders again this year was very positive with the event being very rideable and yet challenging enough to test all levels. DDBC club rider Tom Williams was glad to finish his first event in the expert class even if he was trying to sell green backrounds to anyone that would have them at the burger van. Most improved rider award had to go to sportsman rider Jaime Stiles, he made it up GasGas hill on his hands and knees looking like he was trying to suck moisture from the moss in 2009 but this year he rode up feet up on the peg’s making some of the marshals think he was the first of the championship class on their second lap.
Thanks also needs to go to all that helped make the event a success and to St Johns, DIRT TRAX timing, LAS Recycling Limited, Melingoed Ltd and Kangaloos for their continuing support.
On a negative note there has been an increase in reported illegal riding in the Brechfa Forest since the event and with the possibility of the club being allowed to use the venue again next year this selfish act is now directly threatening that event. If any one knows who these riders are please contact the club or tell them to get out and stay out to safeguard the future of our sport.
